Equipment

  • 1 Ice Cream Maker A Cuisinart model is recommended but any reliable brand will do. Check here for recommended ice cream makers.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk well chilled (Consider using organic milk for a richer taste)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups heavy cream also well chilled
  • 1.5-2 tsp peppermint extract adjust based on how minty you like it
  • 4 oz semi-sweet chocolate bar chopped into tiny pieces (or substitute with dark chocolate chips for a deeper flavor)

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the milk and sugar until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  • Stir in the heavy cream and peppermint extract until well combined.
  • Set up your ice cream maker and pour the mixture into the machine. Churn according to the manufacturer's instructions, usually about 25 minutes.
  • During the last 5 minutes of churning, add the chopped chocolate slowly, ensuring it distributes evenly throughout the ice cream.
  • Once churning is complete, transfer the ice cream to an airtight container and freeze for at least 2-3 hours to firm up.

Notes

Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
For a touch of whimsy, add a few drops of green food coloring to the mixture before churning. It's totally optional but can make serving this treat to kids or at parties a bit more magical. Also, if you're not a fan of peppermint, feel free to experiment with vanilla extract for a subtly sweet version.
